iStents (tube)

iStents (tube) Magnified iStent cross-section

iStents is a smart little procedure, performed during cataract surgery or refractive lensectomy, that may significantly improve the control of glaucoma and reduce the need for topical glaucoma eye drops.

What your surgeon will do:

Your surgeon places a small shunt (tube) in the filter of the eye to allow the fluid in the eye to drain more quickly, thereby reducing the pressure build-up contributing to glaucoma.

Istents FAQs

question

Why opt for iStents?

answer

If you are undergoing Cataract surgery, and have mild to moderate Glaucoma, ask for iStents and have both conditions addressed at the same time. iStents may reduce your dependence on Glaucoma eye drops and improve the control of your eye pressure. Plus, you can never forget to use them because they are implanted in your eye and work 24 hours a day.

It generally takes 5 minutes per eye added to the usual Cataract operating time of 5-10 minutes.

question

What is my recovery time?

answer

Dr. Blaylock recommends quiet time at home, perhaps resting or watching TV, for at least 1 day following your procedure. You can usually go back to work after 24-48 hours, although Dr. Blaylock recommends taking off the remainder of the workweek for a more comfortable recovery.
