What are cataracts?

An extremely common condition, a cataract is the clouding of the eye’s natural lens, causing your vision to become blurry. It generally occurs in people 60 years of age and older, and progressively worsens over time causing vision loss and can potentially lead to blindeness if untreated . Cataracts can also be caused by injury, medications and other health conditions. Though cataracts may be an inevitable part of aging for many of us,  eye surgery is a safe and effective option that is constantly evolving, with new technologies, to keep up with today’s active seniors intent on living their best life, uninhibited by impaired vision.

What causes cataracts?

In a healthy eye, the crystalline lens focuses light that enters the eye and converges the light onto the retina. In an eye with a cataract, the crystalline lens becomes cloudy and light is unable to pass freely through the lens to the retina. Symptoms of cataracts are blurred vision, loss of contrast sensitivity and veiling glare as light enters the eye.
